Katey Winfrey
On August 16, 1987 Rick Winfrey and Mona Winfrey (Lester) gave birth to twins at Bonne Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri. They were named Laura Kathleen “Katey” Winfrey and Kelley Lynn Winfrey. They joined an older sister Cassie. Katey and Kelley were together in the womb and became playmates and constant companions for one another.
They lived in Salisbury, Missouri for the first 5 years, and then moved to Columbia after their parents divorced. One year later they moved to New Bloomfield, Missouri where they attended New Bloomfield School.
Katey loved to play softball. “She could run like the wind” is what everyone said. Katey also played basketball and ran on the track team. She loved to go fishing, hiking, and all outdoor activities.
Katey had a very diverse circle of friends as she loved everyone and was very loyal to her friends. Katey would meet someone and the next day they would be at our house. She wanted us to meet her new friends. She would open her home and her heart to everyone she met.
Katey’s favorite TV show (at age 18) was Sponge Bob!! Katey’s bedroom is painted blue, yellow, green and red in keeping with the Sponge Bob theme.
She was such a joy to be around. She had a great deal of passion with everything she did, whether she was cleaning her room or at working at Dairy Queen. She always wanted to do the best job possible.
At Christmas time, 2006 Katey took a trip to South Carolina to see some friends. She got to play on the Beach and called me one day during her frolicking on the Beach and was so excited. She said, “Momma, this is so cool. I found a ‘whole sand dollar’. I will bring it home to you.” She was always bringing all her family gifts. She loved to give not only material items but also she gave from within her heart. Katey always gave the most powerful hugs you could imagine. She literally would take your breath away when she gave one of her big bear hugs.
Katey was one of the most special kids I have ever known and will continue to live in our hearts.
Katey was killed in a tragic car accident on February 14, 2006.
How does a mom say goodbye to one of her children?
At one time I was living, now I’m only surviving.
Our lives are changed forever. I have no peace left inside of me.
The first thought of every day is Katey is
not here anymore, and the last thought when I close my eyes at night is Katey is not here anymore.
If only one more time I could see her and tell her how much I love her,kiss her and hug her.
If only one more time I could see her smile,
touch her hair, hold her hand.
If only I had one more minute with her.
I'd have life again, at least for that one moment in time.
